Location

Valpolicella is a famous wine region in the Italian province of Verona, in the northeast of the country. The region is best known for its diverse and distinctive red wines. The name “Valpolicella” likely derives from “Vallis Polis Cellae,” which means “Valley of Many Wine Cellars.”

  • Geography and Climate

Valpolicella is located in the hilly areas northwest of Verona and covers an area of about 240 square kilometers. The region is characterized by a mild climate influenced by the nearby Alps and Lake Garda. These climatic conditions are ideal for viticulture, as they provide ample sunshine and protection from extreme weather conditions.

  • Wine Production

Valpolicella wines are primarily made from native grape varieties such as Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. There are various categories of Valpolicella wines, which differ in style and production methods:

Valpolicella Classico: This is the simplest and lightest wine of the region, typically enjoyed young. It is characterized by fruity aromas of cherries and a pleasant freshness.

Valpolicella Superiore: This wine must age for at least one year and has a higher alcohol content than the Classico. It offers more structure and complexity.

Ripasso della Valpolicella: In this technique, young Valpolicella wine is fermented on the skins of Amarone, which gives it more body, depth, and greater complexity.

Amarone della Valpolicella: Amarone is the region’s most prestigious wine. It is made from dried grapes, which give it high concentration and an intense flavor. The wine has robust aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, and spices and can age for decades.

Recioto della Valpolicella: This is a sweet dessert wine also made from dried grapes. It is rich and sweet, with aromas of raisins, cherries, and plums.

  • History

Winegrowing in Valpolicella has a long tradition dating back to Roman times. Even the Romans appreciated the wines of this region and encouraged their cultivation. Over the centuries, Valpolicella’s winemakers have refined their techniques and developed a rich winemaking tradition that continues to this day.

  • Food Pairings

Valpolicella wines are extremely versatile and pair well with a wide variety of dishes. The light Valpolicella Classico is ideal for pasta dishes, pizza, and grilled vegetables. Valpolicella Superiore and Ripasso are excellent with meat dishes, game, and aged cheeses. Amarone is an excellent accompaniment to hearty dishes such as roast beef, game, and aged Parmesan. Recioto della Valpolicella pairs perfectly with desserts, especially chocolate desserts and cakes.
